Great Sand Dunes National Park: Splashes and Sand

When you think of sand dunes, Colorado may not be the first place that comes to mind. But there are indeed natural sand dunes in Mosca, Colorado. The Great Sand Dunes National Park Reserve has various activities for families to enjoy year-round. Here are the top 3 that even the youngest of the family can do.

Splashing at Medano Creek

Medano Creek sits at the base of the Great Sand Dunes and is a popular spot for splashing at all ages. The shallow wide creek is like a beach that flows all around the basin. The sometimes intense waves offer hours of fun for everyone, as they rapidly crash around and keep the water flowing. Bring your tubes for added entertainment! Since the water is shallow, the waves offer safer family fun than your typical beach front.

Sand Boarding and Sand Sledding

Sand boarding and sand sledding is similar to snowboarding and snow sledding, except there’s no snow. You can rent sandboards and sand sleds to slide down the dunes. Kids and adults alike are thrilled by this unique experience. Sandboards have foot straps for secure standing and sand sleds have handles and padded seats for security and comfort.

Camping at the Great Sand Dunes Oasis

Pitch a tent or hook up the RV for family adventures like no other when you camp at the Great Sand Dunes Oasis. In addition to the activities above, you can also enjoy hiking and backpacking, free ranger programs, junior ranger programs, horseback riding, fat biking, and more. Check out the Vistor’s Center for tour and activity information.
